The Big Apple comes with big expectations — and sometimes, big disappointments.
To this point in the 2023 season, the Mets have been arguably MLB's biggest disappointment. They were expected to be World Series contenders, but they find themselves closer to last place than first in the NL East and wild-card races. They're trying to turn their season around, and this week in Seattle, they will have the opportunity to shape their future as well.
Because the team exceeded the competitive balance tax threshold by more than $40 million last season, the Metropolitans lack a true first-round selection — their pick dropped 10 spots. They'll finally get on the clock at No. 32.
MLB DRAFT: Top 100 big board | SN's mock draft
The round hasn't been kind to the Mets in recent history. They've gone without drafting an All-Star in it since 2014, when they selected Michael Conforto.
Only two first-rounders from the 2015-21 drafts remain in the organization — starter David Peterson and third baseman Brett Baty.
Team owner Steve Cohen has promised to spend while also trying to build the farm system to produce sustainable success. Money can solve plenty of problems, but Cohen's checkbook can only go so far. If the Mets want to become one of the league's best, they'll have to start identifying talent better in the draft.
At MLB's All-Star week, New York will hope to select someone who can one day represent the orange and blue in the Midsummer Classic. The Mets might not make their first selection until No. 32, but they do have two compensation picks thanks to the departures of Jacob deGrom and Chris Bassitt.
Here's where the Mets will select in the 2023 MLB Draft, and who they might take early on.
