Yet another Formula 1 qualifying session ended under red-flag conditions on Saturday ahead of the 2023 Spanish Grand Prix, resulting in a first-time pole winner at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
Max Verstappen, winner of three F1 races this year — including two straight in Miami and Monaco — took home his fourth pole position of the season. He paced the field with a time of 1:13.615, but that was only part of the story from Saturday's qualifying sessions.
Rainy weather and a slick surface caused several minor incidents that resulted in spinouts and gravel on the track. Valtteri Bottas (Alfa Romeo), Alexander Albon (Williams), Nyck De Vries (AlphaTauri) and Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin) all experienced some of the consequences of the less-than-ideal race conditions.
Sergio Perez, second in the F1 standings behind Verstappen with 105 points, finished 11th in qualifying.

Red Bull Racing got the pole from Saturday, but did not have another driver in the top 10. Meanwhile, both McClaren and Alpine had two drivers each in the top 10. Logan Sargeant finished last from Saturday's qualifying.
