Defending Gold Cup champions USA will look to pile some more summer misery on their opponents as they meet neighbors Canada in the 2023 quarterfinals.

After topping Canada in the CONCACAF Nations League final just a few weeks ago, the two sides meet again in the other CONCACAF competition of the summer.

Both teams have patchwork squads after releasing many of their first-team stars for a summer break. Both teams have felt the absences, with the U.S. needing a late goal to draw with Jamaica, while Canada barely qualified for the knockout stage after draws with Guatemala and Guadeloupe.

The U.S. is the clear favorite in this matchup, as they sport significantly better depth than their northern neighbors, and have been able to patch over the missing pieces more effectively. Still, the two teams will need to prove their worth as they both fight for a chance at continental silverware.

USA vs Canada lineups, team news

The U.S. midfield is thin, but has received one reinforcement as Jackson Yueill was added to the roster to replace the injured Alan SonoraJordan Morris is training separately, but is expected to be available. The availability of midfielder Aidan Morris is unknown having departed the team for personal reasons.

The biggest question for interim manager B.J. Callaghan for this match was whether to risk rising center-back star Jalen Neal, who is on a yellow card, meaning he would be suspended for a match should he pick up another. He sticks with Neal, rather than turning to Matt Miazga to partner with Miles Robinson.

Additionally, Alex Zendejas has struggled in this tournament, but given the relatively thin options behind him, Callaghan sticks with Zendejas, turning to Julian Gressel on the other wing and leaving Cade Cowell as an option off the bench.

USA confirmed starting lineup (4-3-3): Turner (GK) — Reynolds, Robinson, Neal, Jones — Busio, Sands, Mihailovic — Zendejas, Ferreira, Gressel.

The Canada Gold Cup squad is missing a host of first-team regulars, such as Alphonso DaviesJonathan DavidAlistair JohnstonStephen Eustaquio, Ismael Kone, and Sam Adekugbe who were all sent home for summer rest after Nations League duty.

Adding to those missing pieces, first-choice goalkeeper Milan Borjan was removed from the roster with an undisclosed injury, leaving Dayne St. Clair as the starter in goal.

That has left the Canada roster extremely thin, with Lucas Cavallini starting up front with other more inexperienced players around him. The most entrenched first-teamers still with the squad include Jonathan Osorio, Junior Hoilett, and Kamal Miller.

Canada confirmed starting lineup (3-5-2): St. Clair (GK) — McGraw, Vitoria, Miller — Laryea, Ahmed, Bombito, Osorio, Millar — Hoilett, Cavallini.

USA vs Canada betting odds

Canada is a big underdog in this match, but maybe not as big as expected given their average performances this tournament and their missing key players. Sportsbooks are still installing Canada at just a hair over 3/1 to win in regulation, and under 2/1 to advance to the semifinal round.

Additionally, goals are expected to be at a premium despite the fact that Canada put four past Cuba in the last round, while the United States hung 12 combined goals on St. Kitts & Nevis and Trinidad & Tobago.
