Savannah Marshall was on top of the middleweight division, using brute force to showcase her dominance. Losing to Claressa Shields in October 2022, the Brit could have competed in a rebound bout or attempted to rematch Shields. Instead, she will take a detour which could lead to the American.
Inside the AO Arena in Manchester, Marshall faces Franchon Crews-Dezurn for the latter's status as undisputed super middleweight champion. The fight airs on ESPN+ in the U.S. on July 1.
Winning the WBO middleweight title in 2020, Marshall defended the belt three times before facing Shields inside the O2 Arena. Avenging a loss from the amateurs, Shields beat Marshall via unanimous decision. Marshall, the hometown hero, now faces a former Shields opponent and current sparring partner in Crews-Dezurn.
"How can I go, after losing my world title, back down to eight rounds,” Marshall said via Boxing Scene. "Fans have supported me. Fans from Hartlepool traveling all across the country, pulling hard for me. How can I jump into an eight-round and want to build myself again? I believe I’m at world level. These are the sort of fights I want."
