For the second consecutive year, the Senators won't have a pick on Day 1 of the NHL Draft.
After trading away its 2022 first-rounder to acquire Alex DeBrincat, Ottawa traded away its top selection in this year's draft for another young building block.
Despite the fact that the Senators are working out of a rebuild, GM Pierre Dorion has decided to use the club's best draft capital to bring in proven talent that can help the team immediately rather than add a high-end prospect who eventually could crack the NHL in a couple of years.

Why don't the Senators have a first-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft?
The Senators traded their 2023 first-round pick at the trade deadline in March.
Ottawa was one of a number of teams interested in defenseman Jakob Chychrun. While the Senators missed the postseason this year, the club wanted to boost its blue line for the future. Chychrun is signed for another two years at a very team-friendly cap hit of $4.6 million a year.
Here's the 2023 trade:
- Senators receive: D Jakob Chychrun
- Coyotes receive: 2023 conditional first-round pick, 2024 conditional second-round pick, 2026 second-round pick
Considering what the reported asks were from the Coyotes, the package sent by the Senators was fairly light. However, Arizona reportedly liked the idea of acquiring picks from a lower team so that the selections would be higher up in the draft.
Who is picking in the Senators' position?
The Senators traded away their first-round pick in 2023 to the Coyotes, resulting in Arizona owning the No. 12 selection in the draft.
Washington flipped the first-round pick acquired in the Orlov deal to Toronto. It was part of the package sent to the Maple Leafs with defenseman Erik Gustafsson in exchange for defenseman Rasmus Sandin.
