And then there were four.
The USFL playoffs kick off on Saturday with the North Division championship played between two teams that didn't make a great case for their presence in the postseason. But that's what happens in a league where 50 percent of the teams make the playoffs.
Unfortunately, or fortunately — depending on your point of view — the league had all of its heavyweights in the South Division, leaving no true powerhouse in the North. It turned out to be a competitive division as a result, just not necessarily in the way you'd imagine.
Both the Pittsburgh Maulers — who are the regular season division winner — and the Michigan Panthers come into the weekend with a 4-6 record.
And just like the NFL's AFC North, the USFL's North Division teams rely on their defenses to win, making for a likely low-scoring battle between the two sides. It's been the case through the two regular-season meetings, with the Panthers unable to surpass seven points in either game. The Maulers have outscored them a combined 42-14.
