If you have followed Daniel Ricciardo's career closely, you will have seen plenty of his performance coach Michael Italiano.

Italiano travelled with Ricciardo to Formula 1 races and was regularly seen in the garage, pitlane and even on Drive to Survive.

However, with the Australian driver not securing a spot on this season's grid, his now-former trainer has transitioned to a new role for 2023.

Michael Italiano named Yuki Tsunoda's 2023 performance coach

Whilst his former client - and close friend - Daniel Ricciardo has moved off the F1 grid, Italiano will remain on the paddock as a performance coach.

For 2023, he is the trainer of AlphaTauri driver Yuki Tsunoda.

Tsunoda, 22, is currently competing in his third season in F1.

The young Japanese racer finished 14th and 17th in the 2021 and 2022 driver standings, respectively.

As a performance coach, Italiano is tasked with ensuring his driver is in the best physical and mental state possible to achieve success.

Tsunoda's experience, age and personality are all different compared to Ricciardo, but Italiano explained in pre-season that he is looking forward to the change.

"(Tsunoda and Ricciardo) are definitely different characters, but I think that's part of being a coach," he said," Italiano told The Sporting News.

"You need to be versatile, and you need to be flexible with the athletes that you have on your hands.

"Yuki is a lot younger than Daniel - he's 22. So he's still figuring himself out in Formula 1.

"He comes from a background where he's not used to the European lifestyle, so he's also had to adjust to that. He's had a lot of adversity and he's dealt with it really well.

"I'm actually really excited to now take on a younger driver and almost nurture him in a way ... give him my experience as an older person, being 10 years older than him.

"And I want to take on a little bit more of a mentoring role and help him get through life, figure himself out and make sure that he's improving in Formula 1."

Italiano and Tsunoda spent a good amount of time together prior to the current season.

Notably, the pair had a two-week training camp in Dubai, which saw Italiano run his new driver through intense days, focusing on not just strength and conditioning, but building a relationship.

The Australian trainer has also been present at both opening races of the new season in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.

Who was Yuki Tsunoda's previous trainer?

Yuki Tsunoda was primarily trained by former AlphaTauri performance coach Noel Carroll from 2021 to 2022.

Carroll was previously a strength and conditioning coach at English Premier League club Arsenal.
