The tone and tenor of a NASCAR Cup Series season is so often shaped by its superspeedways.
LIVE: Follow TSN’s coverage of the Ally 400 at Nashville
The harrowing expanse of asphalt, the sun-stricken cement barriers, all that dirty air — it's a real challenge maneuvering your way around the monstrosity that is the superspeedway.
That's what should make the Ally 400 so interesting. Nashville is no fool's paradise. It requires precise driving — and just a little bit of luck. It's a surface that can chew up and spit cars out, as it did during last year's 6 1/2-hour slog.
Chase Elliott ended the day in victory lane the last time the Cup Series travailed to Music City. He could sure use another win this time around; the Hendrick Motorsports star sits in 27th place in the postseason standings, hampered by injuries, suspensions and everything else in between.
Can he do it? There are few that can match the 2020 champion at his peak. But the 27-year-old has looked a mere mortal in the cockpit since returning from the leg fracture he suffered during a snowmobile accident earlier in the year.
There's no better time than now, though. NASCAR's most popular driver could prove its most clutch. He just needs a chance.
