Less than 24 hours after he was arrested in Pittsburgh for failing a field sobriety test, Bob Huggins resigned Saturday as West Virginia men's basketball coach.
Huggins submitted his resignation Saturday night and the university accepted. The parties issued a joint statement announcing the move.
DeCOURCY: Stepping down the call to make
Stadium's Jeff Goodman reported earlier that Huggins had informed the team of his intention to resign. Goodman added that Huggins told his players he was unclear about who their coach would be in 2023
Huggins, 69, had been the Mountaineers' coach since 2007. In that time, his teams went 345-203, making him No. 2 on West Virginia's all-time coaching wins list.
His offseason has been marred by controversy. In May, he was suspended for the first three games of the Mountaineers' 2023-24 season for making homophobic remarks on a Cincinnati radio talk show.
Here's what to know about Huggins' departure from West Virginia:
Why did Bob Huggins resign as West Virginia coach?
Huggins said in a statement Saturday night that he was resigning as WVU coach and retiring.
"My recent actions do not represent the values of the University or the leadership expected in this role," Huggins said. "While I have always tried to represent our University with honor, I have let all of you — and myself — down. I am solely responsible for my conduct and sincerely apologize to the University community — particularly the student-athletes, coaches and staff in our program."

Bob Huggins Cincinnati resignation
This is not the first time Huggins has resigned from a post.
In 2005, he resigned after being given an ultimatum by Cincinnati president Nancy Zimpher. He could either resign and take a buyout, or stay in the athletic department for the rest of his contract. If Huggins did not respond to the ultimatum within 24 hours, he would be fired. Huggins resigned.
Zimpher had been angling to remove Huggins since a DUI in 2004, when police video tapes surfaced of Huggins failing a field sobriety test, per The Seattle Times.
Bob Huggins West Virginia record

In that span, Huggins went to five Sweet 16s and a Final Four in 2010.
West Virginia went 19-15 last year and 7-11 in the Big 12, eighth in the conference. The Mountaineers were eliminated in the first round of the NCAAs by Maryland 67-65.
