New York and Las Vegas are in a battle for the ages, hoping to end up on the winning side of history.
The two franchises, dubbed superteams and Finals favorites at the beginning of the season, will be meeting for the first time on the court on Thursday. The Liberty are coming in with a 10-3 record after defeating the Sun 89-81 on Tuesday, while the Aces have a stunning 13-1 record as they chase a second consecutive league title.
New York's biggest focus has been utilizing their players — who have all stood atop the throne as a No. 1 option at some point in their career — in a way that keeps the machine well-oiled, complementing each other rather than causing turbulence.
It seems it's so far been an easy adjustment for Breanna Stewart and Courtney Vandersloot, who lead the team in every statistical category and have started every game. Jonquel Jones is also in the top five on the team, averaging a double-double in 21.8 minutes while also starting every game.
Las Vegas, on the other hand, has been on fire. It was the first professional sports team to bring a trophy to the city, and its efficiency proves it is not shying away from doing it again — much like Dawn Staley's powerhouse in South Carolina.
Becky Hammon is only in her second year with the Aces franchise and has managed to create an uproar of success. Can she continue their war path of destruction to another WNBA Finals, and will it be against the Liberty? Or will someone come from the rear and unseat them?
Only time will tell.
