The Golden Knights made history in June, winning the franchise its first Stanley Cup just six years after joining the NHL.

Now, the club is making history again.

Vegas is the first team to get the Stanley Cup engraved before heading off for the summer tour of parties and celebrations. Instead of waiting before the season starts, the club is electing to get the names on the trophy less than a month after hoisting it.

The process takes a bit, but all of the engravings are expected to be done by Saturday, July 8. Then, it's off for all of the players and coaches to have their day with the Stanley Cup.

It's unclear as of now who gets the Stanley Cup first, however, head coach Bruce Cassidy is scheduled to take the Stanley Cup to an elementary school in Milton, Mass. on Thursday, July 13.

Nonetheless, when each player gets their special day to celebrate, their name will be freshly etched into the silver cup, thanks to the decision by Vegas' front office.

Before the next season starts, the names would be engraved on the Stanley Cup in September.

How do they add names to the Stanley Cup?

Louise St. Jacques is the one behind the engraving nowadays.

The Montreal silversmith started doing the process in 1988, marking the fourth generation of Stanley Cup engravers. She uses a stencil — a different one for each letter, number and symbol — along with a hammer to manually place each name onto the cup. The process takes 10 days to complete.

If an error does occur, it isn't corrected. Instead, it remains on the cup. For example, the New York Islanders championship in 1980-81 has the team's name misspelled as "Ilanders."

How many names are on the Stanley Cup?

In total, there are over 3,300 names that have appeared on the Stanley Cup, with over 2,300 on it currently.

Each championship team gets to add a maximum of 52 names.
