U.S. Open golf scores, results: Rickie Fowler, Wyndham Clark co-leaders after 3 rounds as they seek 1st major win

Early on, Day 3 of the U.S. Open looked as if it was going to be a barnburner similar to Day 1, with a great deal of movement up and down the leaderboard.

In the end, however, the players with the later tee times were affected by a Los Angeles Country Club North Course that became less and less forgiving as the day went on. Most of the leaders finished Saturday anywhere from 1 over par to 1 under par for the round. Scottie Scheffler (-2) Xander Schauffele (+3 on an absolute roller-coaster of a day) were the outliers.

The result is a Round 4 that promises to come down to the wire, with Rickie Fowler and Wyndham Clark leading the field into Sunday at 10 under for the championship. They'll be in pursuit of their first major win.

Scottie Scheffler is firmly in striking distance at 7 under after an eagle on 17 and a birdie on 18.

Rory McIlroy is also in the mix after shooting a 1-under 69 Saturday. He's seeking his first major win since 2014 and his first U.S. Open title since 2011.

Scheffler, the 2022 Masters champion and the world No. 1, is also primed to strike, and Harris English is just behind at 6 under through three days. Dustin Johnson is the top LIV Golf player, tied for sixth with Schauffele at 5 under.

U.S. Open live updates, highlights from Saturday's Round 3

10:59 p.m.: Clark birdies to move to within a shot of Fowler for the lead. An incredible tee shot put him in a great position and he capitalized as Fowler attempted to save par. Fowler ended up three-putting for a bogey and just a share of the 54-hole lead.

10:56 p.m.: Both Fowler and Clark now approach the green to round out Day 3, and it looks like Fowler will take the lead into Sunday as he continues his quest for his first major championship.

10:46 p.m.: Clark makes the bogey putt at the 17 to stay in second, though he has now moved back into a tie with McIlroy, who ended his third round at 9 under.

10:29 p.m.: Clark FRUSTRATED as he barely misses a birdie putt and has to settle for par on No. 16. A good shot, but he remains a shot off the lead.

10:12 p.m.: Hard to say enough about the way Scheffler rounded out his day. An eagle on 17 and a birdie on 18 has him at 7-under par, putting him in a great position heading into Sunday. Certainly better than where he would have been at 4-under.

10:10 p.m.: McIlroy also chugs right along, birdying on 14 to move to within two strokes of Fowler in the lead. Expect a lot of wrestling here down the stretch.

10:09 p.m.: Scottie Scheffler hit what may have been the shot of the day, burying an eagle on No. 17 to get into the top five to go into 18 strong. Incredible work to finish strong going into the clubhouse.

10:06 p.m.: Rickie Fowler and Wyndham Clark engage in some push and pull, as Clark answers a Fowler birdie with one of his own to stay within a stroke of the lead.

9:16 p.m.: Once again a bit of movement. Clark finally gets snakebitten by a bogey and he moves into a tie with Fowler. McIlroy pars for his part to stay a stroke back, he thought he had the birdie.

9:05 p.m.: Don't look now, but Cam Smith has put himself into a good spot on the leaderboard at 5-under, tied with Dustin Johnson for sixth. The top of the leaderboard may have stagnated a hair, but things in the next tier are fluid.

9 p.m.: Clark must be going insane. He lips out on the 10th and just misses a birdie putt. He'll once again stay at 11-under.

8:49 p.m.: Clark once again saves par to retain his 11-under. He may not be widening his lead, but with the way this course has played as the day has worn on, preserving it is extremely impressive.

8:43 p.m.: Schauffele finishes the first nine... With three pars.

8:38 p.m.: English moves up a slot into a tie for second with Fowler, leaving McIlroy alone in fourth. Nagano, meanwhile, has moved back into the top six with a birdie on No. 14 later in his day. Cam Smith is also creeping into the mix.

8:36 p.m.: Schauffele AGAIN birdies as Clark continues to stagnate at 11-under. This is an incredible turnaround for Schauffele, who has adopted a "never-par" approach.

8:25 p.m.: Schauffele is clawing his way back into things. He thought he had an eagle on No. 8 but it stayed just out of the cup, and he birdies back to 7-under. Frustrating turn of events there but it's good when your bad scenario is a birdie.

8:19 p.m.: Not to be outdone, Fowler hits an unbelievable putt to move to within a stroke of Clark and the lead. Huge shot. Lower on the board, Nagano has dropped out of the top seven and Dustin Johnson is in at 4-under par. 

8:16 p.m.: Rumors of the demise of Xander Schauffele have been greatly exaggerated. He hits an incredible drive over the trees on his eighth hole and has a golden opportunity for an eagle putt. Outstanding job by Schauffele to recover from a nightmare start to the day.

8:01 p.m.: If Schauffele is to recover, now is the time. He birdies to move back to 6-under par and into sole possession of fourth place. Now he needs to build momentum.

7:59 p.m.: McIlroy saved par after chipping out of the bunker. Clark has put himself in a position to extend his lead here. Fowler, meanwhile, puts another one in the bunker over the green.

7:53 p.m.: Lee is right back in the mix at 5-under but much of the rest of the board is starting to settle a bit. McIlroy lays up from the bunker for a tough putt. Fowler, meanwhile, is going to bogey on his fifth hole to lose outright second.

7:48 p.m.: Johnson and Lee drop out of the top five with respective bogeys, as McIlroy puts a drive into the bunker. Hardly the end of the world, but he came up just short on his drive.

7:45 p.m.: English birdies out to now move to a tie for third with McIlroy, continuing the heavy movement. 

7:43 p.m.: Schauffele bogeyed yet again, continuing what has been an extremely tough day thus far. We now have a five-way tie for fifth as Nagano continues to rocket up the boards.

7:39 p.m.: There's a lot of leaderboard movement right now. As Fowler and Clark impress Schauffele and McIlroy drop. Meanwhile Dustin Johnson has moved to 5-under and Ryutaro Nagano has moved up with an eagle.

7:21 p.m.: Clark sinks a birdie putt, his second birdie of the day, and he's back out in front of the field.

7:15 p.m.: While Schauffele has struggled, McIlroy has continued his great play to begin the day, sinking a birdie putt to move into a tie for the lead. Schauffele, meanwhile, settles for the bogey putt to fall back to four strokes behind the lead.

7:14 p.m.: Schauffele's rough start continues. His uphill putt for par on the third hole stops shy of the hole, and he'll have already at least his second bogey of the day. He'll have to putt again to avoid anything worse.

7:10 p.m.: Fowler follows up his birdie on the first hole with a bogey on his second to fall back into a tie with Clark for the lead.

7:07 p.m.: After matching the record for the lowest front nine at the U.S. Open at 29, Tom Kim finished his afternoon with four under for the day, shooting 66 in the third round, currently the lowest of the day.

6:54 p.m.: Clark starts his afternoon with a birdie to move into a tie for the lead on his first hole of the day. But it doesn't last long as Fowler hits a birdie of his own to move to 11 under.

6:45 p.m.: McIlroy stays just a little left on his eagle putt and "settles" for a birdie with his first hole of the day. He moves to a tie for second with Wyndham Clark as Clark and Rickie Fowler get their day going.

6:36 p.m.: Disastrous start here for Schauffele. His second shot flies straight up and back into the bunker, and it happens again here. Hard to imagine a worse first hole.

6:33 p.m.: Big start here for Harris English, as he immediately birdies to get to 8-under par and tie with Schauffele and McIlroy for the day. McIlroy had a strong drive to start his day while Schauffele found the bunker with his first shot. Fowler and Clark due up next, so things are only going to get crazier.

6:27 p.m.: Scottie Scheffler has made his way onto the leaderboard with an early birdie to get to 6-under. Xander Schauffele and Rory McIlroy are preparing to tee off.

6:15 p.m.: L.A.C.C. may be fairly player-friendly so far Saturday, but when players are hitting shots like this, it's hard to point to the course. Terrific shot from Koepka out of the sand to birdie.

6:07 p.m.: A late welcome to those just joining the coverage for the prime slots! We start with a welcoming birdie, the course has played much like that all day.

6:03 p.m.: Here's the shot from DeChambeau on nine that very nearly got him an ace.

5:55 p.m.: Some BIG cheers coming out. First Sam Burns eagles to a raucous cheer on Hole 6, then Bryson DeChambeau birdies on 8 to continue his day. Burns has hit some unbelievable shots this tournament. DeChambeau then nearly aces his next shot. Things are moving fast in Los Angeles.

5:54 p.m.: Kim struggling a bit on the second nine, at least relative to how he started his day. He now bogeys to move back to 5-under for the tournament.

5:48 p.m.: Kim tied the U.S. Open course record with 29 through the first nine, featuring a ridiculous six birdies. Massive day for him and possibly a sign of things to come.

5:28 p.m.: And after a third straight birdie, this one on the 10th hole, Kim has officially climbed into the top six, matching Min Woo Lee and Dustin Johnson at 6 under. He shot par at No. 11 to snap his birdie run.

5:08 p.m.: Tom Kim is red hot. Back-to-back birdies at the Nos. 8 and 9, putting him 6 under in the third round, has him now tied for eighth with Scottie Scheffler and Sam Bennett. He has six total birdies through the front nine.

4:55 p.m.: It doesn't get much closer than this. Amateur Ben Carr just missed a hole-out eagle on the 16th hole.

4:42 p.m.: A fourth birdie of the day for Matsuyama, this one on the par-5 No. 8, continues his upward climb on the leaderboard. He's now vaulted up to a tie for 11th, moving up 28 spots on Saturday.

4:29 p.m.: Brooks Koepka has holed out for birdie on two of his first four holes, so he could be priming himself for a big day. Now sitting a 2-under par.

4:27 p.m.: Hideki Matsuyama JUST misses an ace on No. 7 and it rolls past the hole. Feels like a matter of time on Saturday here.

4:14 p.m.: It's moving day, but a lot of these players are stuck in L.A. traffic. No one has really made a run at the course leader Fowler yet, so we'll see as we approach the later tee times who will be able to shake up the leaderboard.

3:37 p.m.: Patrick Cantlay hits a beautiful birdie on No. 9 to round out the first nine of the course. Some beautiful backspin on the slope of the 179-yard hole put him in a position.

3:25 p.m.: No. 1 has been surprisingly player-friendly so far Saturday, and Gordon Sargent is no exception. Great shot here over the middle of the fairway to set himself up nicely to start his day.

2:49 p.m.: Sometimes the best way there is through. Tommy Fleetwood hits an awesome shot over the trees on No. 8 to give himself a shot at an eagle. The most creative solution at times is to not get creative.

2:38 p.m.: Abraham Ancer has the answer. He eagles on a textbook approach to move to even again. Incredible work on this second shot.
