It was a disappointing day for India at Wimbledon 2023 as Yuki Bhambri and Saketh Myneni bit the dust in men's doubles while sixth seeds Rohan Bopanna and Gabriela Dabrowski were ousted in the mixed doubles event.

Bopanna is now the only Indian left in the fray as he is in the second round of men's doubles, along with Australia's Matt Ebden.

Indian doubles veteran Rohan Bopanna joined forces with Gabriela Dabrowski for the mixed doubles event at Wimbledon 2023. The Indo-Canadian duo had won the 2017 French Open together, which was the first Grand Slam title for both players.

Bopanna-Dabrowski, however, failed to recreate that magic at Wimbledon this year as they narrowly lost in the first round of mixed doubles on Sunday.

Despite a strong start, they went down 7-6 (5), 3-6, 4-6 to 2019 Wimbledon champions Ivan Dodig and Latisha Chan.

In men's doubles, Yuki Bhambri and Saketh Myneni battled valiantly, but suffered a 4-6, 6-4, 4-6 defeat to Adrian Mannarino and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.

Davidovich Fokina and Mannarino are established players and are currently ranked No 34 and No 35 respectively in singles. The quality on the serve and the depth of serve proved too much for the Indian doubles specialists on the day.

The other Indian team in contention, Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan and N Sriram Balaji also lost their first round match. The Indian duo lost 6-7 (5), 4-6 to second seeds Austin Krajicek and Ivan Dodig in a rain-delayed contest.

How did Rohan Bopanna perform in men's doubles?

Bopanna started his men's doubles campaign with a dramatic victory in the first round on Friday.

Bopanna and Australian partner Matthew Ebden staved off an incredible comeback from Argentina's Guillermo Duran and Tomas Martin Etcheverry to prevail 6-2, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (8) in two hours and 12 minutes.

After a first set blowout, Duran-Etcheverry found their footing on the hallowed lawns. They fought back from a match point, at 4-5 on their serve, to take the match into a decider. The young Argentine pair kept toe to toe with their more experienced rivals and even had a match point of their own, at 6-5 on Ebden's serve.

But Bopanna-Ebden, who are the 2023 Indian Wells champions, held their nerve in the closing stages of the match. In the third set-tie-break, Bopanna gave the team a decisive 7-6 lead with a stunning backhand return winner.

The Australian then held up his end and pierced the gap between the Duran and Etcheverry with a precise forehand to bring up match point. He closed out the match with a smash volley to take the team into the second round.

What next for Rohan Bopanna?

After the stirring win, Bopanna-Ebden will face British pair of Jacob Feranley and Johannus Monday in the second round, which is scheduled for Monday.
