Calgary's hockey team is going down in flames.
After a wild few days of players asking out, the Flames decided to make a deal with the Devils — sending winger Tyler Toffoli to the Garden State. It is the first of many shoes expected to drop in Calgary, while the Devils try to build on a surprising 2022-23 season.

The deal represents two franchises heading in complete opposite directions. The Flames are teetering on the edge of a rebuild, whereas New Jersey's window to win a Stanley Cup has burst wide open.
The Sporting News has what you need to know about the Toffoli trade to New Jersey.
Tyler Toffoli trade details
- Devils receive: Tyler Toffoli
- Flames receive: Yegor Sharangovich, 2023 third round pick (No. 80 overall)
The Devils are acquiring the 31-year-old Toffoli following a career year in western Canada. The wing played in all 82 games, notching 34 goals and recording 73 points — both of which were a career-high. His fit is seamless in New Jersey, as he is capable of playing on any line.

The sniper should enjoy the level of talent surrounding him on the Devils, something that turned out to be a disappointment on the 2022-23 Flames. These are the type of win-now moves we can expect to see from Devils GM Tom Fitzgerald with the Devils' second round playoff appearance last year.
The Flames acquire the rights to restricted free agent Yegor Sharangovich along with pick No. 80 overall in the 2023 NHL Draft, which falls in the third round. Sharangovich had a down 2022-23, scoring only 13 goals after breaking out with 24 in the previous season.
Calgary shouldn't have any problems retaining him thanks to his RFA status. As for the rest of the roster, Toffoli is first out the door in what should be the first of many moves to come.
According to PuckPedia, the pick acquired by Calgary is reclaiming their own, which was originally traded in March 2022 for Calle Järnkrok.
